The 24th Diné Studies Conference, scheduled to take place this autumn from October 9th to the 11th at Fort Lewis College. In proximity to our northern sacred mountain Dibé Nitsaa, we will gather as relatives for a multicultural, multilingual, multigenerational event that bridges Western academia with Diné knowledge. This year’s theme, Halee Bee Nánís'dzá (Pathways back to the Homeland), was chosen by the Board of Directors because it captures the essence of Diné ceremonial and cultural concepts that orient us to our homelands and promote the sharing of knowledge within our communities. Indigenous knowledge is never held by a single individual; instead, it is collective—shared, lived, and experienced together. Through spaces like Diné Studies Conference, we create opportunities for this knowledge to be practiced, carried forward, and sustained.
Presentations will span five thematic foci:
- Nourishing Our Homelands: Land, Water, and Climate Stewardship
- Storying our Return: Diné Aesthetics in Art and Literature
- Tracing Our Pathways: History, Anthropology, and Archaeology
- Hózhó as Homecoming: Culture, Community, and Ceremony
- Living Knowledge: Language, Education, and Diné Ways of Knowing
Typically, 250–300 participants attend, including emerging scholars, established academics, Diné youth, and traditional knowledge holders from across the country. While the conference focuses on Diné themes, it acts as a learning hub for participants from diverse backgrounds, regions, and cultures to come together as a community. We invite you to join us for a weekend of learning, sharing and collaborating in the beautiful mountain town of Durango, Colorado.
