New Insights into Microbiomes; Impact of Innovations and Advances in Omic Technologies on Understanding Divers
About this Event

The Conference

The 23rd International Conference in Genomics and Proteomics will be held at the University of West London, a new hub for the Microbiomes, Environment and Health group on 24-25 June 2024.

The conference will explore cutting-edge technologies, focusing on in-depth investigations into species variants in outbreak infections to the complexities of diverse ecosystems.

A brief history

Cutting-edge technologies have revolutionised the molecular characterisation of microbial pathogens, moving from single-component identification to comprehensive systems, including microbiomes and ecosystems. Omic technologies have played a crucial role, expanding the scope of Life Sciences over the past two decades. The journey began in 1998 with the live demonstration of the first benchtop MALDI-TOF MS (Kratos Analytical) in the UKHSA's (PHLS, HPA, PHE) lecture theatre. Despite the hiatus of a 3-year COVID-19 pandemic, these conferences continued to this 23rd meeting. The use of MALDI-TOF MS and tandem MS/MS has transformed microbial species identification, reducing identification time from days to minutes. For instance, Salmonella spp. typing shifted from DNA sequence data obtained via MS to current Whole Genome Sequencing in the same laboratory, showcasing the rapid adoption of methods from research to clinical reference laboratories.

The 'One-Health' approach, triggered by the 2003 SARS outbreak, emphasises the accelerated emergence of transmissible diseases in the 21st century, impacting both local human health and global economies. Initially applied in clinical contexts, advanced technologies have expanded to diverse environmental ecosystems, allowing the exploration of resistome structures within the microbiomes of humans, animals, and the environment. To address the field's expanded scope, this conference series has formed alliances with the Animal & Plant Health Agency and other London universities. The current conference continues to explore leading-edge technologies, focusing on in-depth investigations into species variants in outbreak infections to the complexities of diverse ecosystems. It covers areas such as the impact of diverse microbiomes on chronic disease development and the systematic investigation of antibiotic-resistant genes in environmental mapping and tracking.
