About the Lecture
Big Data, LLMs, and Frontier Research in Aging and Mobility—Cases in Aging, Global Talents, and Intergenerational Occupational Mobility Research
Rapid growth in large-scale scientific and social data is opening new possibilities for understanding aging, mobility, and social change. This lecture explores how big data and large language models (LLMs) can help researchers examine long-term changes, trajectories, networks, and emerging research frontiers. Drawing on large-scale Scopus publication data, the first case maps the evolution of global aging research, including shifts in major topics, emerging frontiers, the changing geography of knowledge production, and China’s participation in the international research landscape. The lecture then turns to different forms of mobility. Research on global scientific talent mobility traces researchers across countries and institutions to understand changing career trajectories, while related work on knowledge mobility examines how ideas, research topics, and collaborative networks move across institutional and national boundaries. A further case extends the discussion to intergenerational occupational mobility, examining how changing occupational structures and labor-market conditions shape opportunities across generations and over the life course. Together, these cases connect the evolution of knowledge with the movement of people and occupational opportunities, illustrating new ways of studying aging and mobility through trajectories, networks, and changing social structures.
