Welcome to the 21st Annual WNDX Festival of Moving ImageWelcome to our SPECIAL QUEER EDITION of WNDX, where we’ve built a special program shining a spotlight on the work of Queer filmmakers from the prairies and across Canada working in experimental film and expanded forms, complementing our always open-themed open call program and One Take Super-8 Event.
We’re thrilled to open the festival with a retrospective look at the body of work of Noam Gonick, We Sleep in the Light of the Golden Boy’s Ass; Accessing A Celebration of Noam Gonick’s Oeuvre, curated by Solomon Nagler. This two-program series includes a package of shorts films opening the festival, and Hey! Happy!, Gonick’s first feature film, initially released 25 years ago.
We also have a Queer prairie shorts program, Rebirth // Resurgence // Reoccurrence, specially curated for WNDX by Alex Nguyen, better known as local Drag Queen, Ruby Chopstix. Also featured are Two-Spirit Nehiyaw, Ojibway and Anishinaabe visual storyteller Tristin Greyeyes’ A Cree Approach, in which the director explores why Cree is not their first language; Eryn Foster and Sue Johnson’s Celestial Queer, celebrating the life and work of Nova Scotia gay-rights activist, filmmaker James MacSwain; and Elian Mikkola’s multi-projector 16mm live film performance, Twinklight…
