Don Ross | Fingerstyle guitarist
What a rare opportunity to welcome internationally acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist Don Ross to our Lunar New Year Guitar Night! Don is the only person so far to have won the U.S. National Fingerpick Guitar Championship twice. His compositions “Michael, Michael, Michael,” “Klimbim,” and “Tight Trite Night” have become favourites among fingerstyle guitarists.
Don also has a longstanding connection with China’s fingerstyle guitar community through tours, festivals and masterclasses.
Xiaohui Chen | fingerstyle guitarist, singer songwriter
Xiaohui Chen won second place at the fourth China National Guitar Competition in 2002 and later studied fingerstyle guitar with Gao Jun. After moving to Canada, he attended masterclasses with Tommy Emmanuel, Stephen Bennett, and other accomplished guitarists, developing a distinctive musical voice.
His signature approach blends fingerstyle guitar with singing, combining bass lines, chords, melodic passages, and percussive rhythms to create the sound of a full band with just one guitar. His repertoire spans country blues, inventive arrangements of familiar songs, and original compositions.
In the 90s, Xiaohui has collaborated with Liu Tianli and other musicians on the guitar songbook 93 Golden Hits. He also authored the guitar arrangement book 《只谈吉他—经典改编》, sharing his approach to arranging and performance.
At the Toronto Lunar New Year Guitar Night, Xiaohui will present his distinctive country blues guitar and vocals alongside original works. He will also join Don Ross for two guitar duets, including a well-known Chinese song.
Leo Song | fingerstyle guitarist
With nearly ten years of guitar experience, Leo Song specializes in fingerstyle guitar, guitar and vocals, and band performances. He has performed at numerous University of Toronto campus events and taken part in band tours. It was only in the past five years that she resumed her musical practice under the guidance of Kaylé Brecher. Kyoko is the sole vocalist in the Toronto Jazz Explorer ensemble and performs at community events.
For Kyoko, singing is like surfing waves—embracing the freedom of improvisation while responding to her surroundings and discovering new paths and stories, even in familiar songs. Between notes, rhythms, and words, she loves finding herself immersed in living musical conversations.
Kyoko holds a Master of Fine Arts in Documentary Media from Toronto Metropolitan University. Her award-winning film, Between Allah and Me, is available through public libraries and streaming services.
