Mental Health: Treasuring Christ in a Therapeutic Age
Recent decades have brought a growing awareness of mental health challenges within both the larger culture and the church. Psychologists and psychiatrists have provided increasingly detailed descriptions of struggles such as depression, trauma, anxiety, and obsessions. These observations and categorizations of the human experience have resulted in greater expressions of compassion and care for strugglers, decreased stigmatization, and a search for ways to relieve suffering. And yet without a biblical worldview, these helps can only go so far. A truncated view of God, people, and what ails us leads to simplistic and often misleading paths to wellness and wholeness.
So how do we contend with the reality that our lives and our world are disordered but not rely on the explanations and solutions promoted in a therapeutic age? How do we navigate diagnoses, therapies, and treatments with biblical wisdom, for ourselves, those we love, and those we help? Any answers to these questions must center upon these truths: Christ has come with power to redeem, restore, and reorder all that has been distorted by sin and suffering. Through his Word, the Spirit offers clarity to the confused, comfort to the hurting, and power for meaningful change. Above all, the Spirit reveals Jesus, drawing our needy hearts to him as our first and final hope.
