The Bailey Public Library invites the public to meet the candidates for the Winthrop School Board whose names will be on the ballot in the Nov. 3 election. All seven candidates have accepted the invitation to participate in the event, which begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, in the King Event Room of the Bailey Public Library in downtown Winthrop. The forum will give Winthrop residents an opportunity to learn about the candidates seeking seats on the School Board. Four candidates are running for full three-year terms: Bethany Drouin, Whitney Kahn, Erin Steorts, and Timothy Wess. Three candidates are running to fill a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2027: Ella Braaten, Tracy Hovance, and Julie McFarland. The partial-term seat became vacant following the resignation of former School Board member Erica Dennett in March.
School Board members help guide district priorities and work to ensure Winthrop’s schools meet the needs of students and families. The Board sets district policy, selects and evaluates the superintendent, oversees the school budget, and approves changes to the district’s curriculum.
The event was organized by Library Director Richard Fortin and Bailey librarian Shane Billings, along with a volunteer committee that includes retired Winthrop attorney Michael Levey and Steven McDermott, who serves as chair of Winthrop’s Comprehensive Plan Committee.
Fortin will moderate the forum. Each candidate will have an opportunity to make an opening statement, followed by a discussion of school and district issues, questions submitted by members of the public, and closing statements. Residents may submit questions in writing at the event. The forum will also be livestreamed at youtube.com/@TownofWinthrop.
