In an instant, real people become Real Heroes!
It is under the simple yet powerful ideal of one person putting their own needs aside to help another that the American Red Cross works to provide relief to those impacted by disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Our Real Heroes event celebrates the mission of the Red Cross and spirit of humanitarianism by honoring individuals in Central and Northern New York who have shown courage, dedication, and selfless character by their acts of heroism or volunteerism to assist those in need within their communities.
2026 Real Heroes
Adult Good Samaritan - Kevin Horan, Forestport
An elderly female suffered a medical emergency while operating her vehicle in the Village of Boonville, Oneida County. As the vehicle approached an intersection, the driver became unconscious behind the wheel. Her vehicle continued traveling in the center of the roadway, creating an immediate and serious danger to herself and the public.
Kevin Horan observed the driver slumped over behind the wheel. He safely pulled his own vehicle off the roadway before exiting and running after the moving vehicle. He caught up to the vehicle while it was still in motion. Horan opened the driver's door and successfully placed the vehicle into park, bringing it to a safe stop.

Youth Good Samaritans - Ayham Alzanam and Alksaam Alterri, Utica.
When 13-year-old cousins Ayham Alzanam and Alksaam Alterri saw a young girl struggling in the water at Proctor Park, they immediately jumped into action and helped save her from drowning. Their courage, quick thinking, and willingness to help someone in danger demonstrate that heroism has no age limit.

Blood Services - Maria Marcellus, Syracuse
Maria Marcellus knows the life-saving power of blood donations.
After being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia, Maria underwent 108 transfusions and relied on countless blood and platelets donations to survive. Those selfless gifts gave her a second chance. Now, Maria is paying it forward by hosting blood drives.

Emergency Services - Syracuse Fire Department
When a gas line emergency and nearby house fire forced dozens of Syracuse residents from their homes, members of the Syracuse Fire Department responded swiftly to protect the community and bring the dangerous situations under control. Their courage, professionalism, and commitment to public safety during a complex emergency exemplify the very best of emergency services.

Military - Clear Path for Veterans, Chittenango
Clear Path for Veterans creates a welcoming community where veterans, service members, and military families can find connection, healing, and renewed purpose through peer support, wellness programs, career services, canine support, and other resources.

Community Impact - National Grid
National Grid has demonstrated an enduring commitment to strengthening communities through generous support, employee engagement, and partnership with organizations like the American Red Cross.

Disaster Response - Kabab Guys Mediterranean Grill, Syracuse
When a gas line emergency and nearby house fire on Syracuse’s Butternut Street displaced dozens of residents, The Kabab Guys provided meals from their restaurant to families affected by the crisis. Their generosity offered comfort and care during an incredibly difficult day.
