About this Event
The prize remembers the writer Anthony Burgess and his 30 years of work as an arts writer for the Observer newspaper, which was recognised when he was named Critic of the Year at the British Press Awards.
At this ceremony, we will be joined by this year's shortlistees and the Prize judges from the Observer and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. We will reveal the winner of the 2026 prize, who will receive £3000 and publication in the Observer newspaper. Twi runners-up will receive £500 each.
The judges for 2026 are Anna Leszkiewicz, the arts editor of the Observer, Andrew Biswell, director of the Anthony Burgess Foundation, and Susannah Clapp, the Observer’s theatre critic.
There will be food, drink and speeches, and an opportunity to socialise with fellow writers, journalists and friendly hangers-on. This is not a formal ceremony, so there is no dress code.
