Why There’s a $2 Membership Fee
Under the B.C Motion Picture Act, films shown publicly must normally be reviewed and officially classified by Consumer Protection BC. However, registered non-profit film societies like ours can receive an exemption that allows us to screen unclassified films legally if:
- The screening is limited to members aged 18 or older, and
- Membership is acquired via annual subscription.
The $2 membership fee you pay is necessary to make you a member of the New West Film Society, fulfilling the requirements of provincial law, and enables us to present these films lawfully, exempt from classification.
The venue and festival carry 100% of the legal liability. Even if a parent or guardian gives permission, Consumer Protection BC enforces the law strictly. If inspectors find a minor inside an unclassified screening, the festival faces severe penalties such as seizure of films, heavy fines, or loss of licensing.
