Join us for the 2026 Ed Ricketts Memorial Award and Lecture on Thursday, November 5, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Sanctuary Exploration Center! The Ed Ricketts Memorial Award was created to honor scientists who have exhibited exemplary work throughout their career and advanced the knowledge, appreciation, conservation and/or protection of the marine environment. Recipients are selected by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary research activity panel. The first award was presented 40 years ago, in March of 1986 at a conference at the Monterey Bay Aquarium!
This year’s recipient is Dr. Andrew T. Fisher of the Institute of Marine Sciences at University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). Dr. Fisher has been a positive force in deep-sea research and teaching at UCSC for more than 30 years. His work in the two connected worlds of deep-sea and water/groundwater management provides a deep well of relevant material for sanctuary audiences.
Dr. Fisher’s lecture, “Between Pacific Seamounts: Water, Heat, and Solutes from Rocks to Octopus and Back Again”, will show and link results from field and modeling studies to illustrate how novel tools and computing help to create new opportunities in sub-seafloor exploration and discovery.
This is a free event located in-person at the Sanctuary Exploration Center, 35 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz, Ca. There is also a virtual option available. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. No RSVP is needed for in-person attendance, although seating is limited, so please arrive on time.
