About this Event

On May 9th and 16th, from 00:00am-00:00pm, Brought to you by the Medic Coalition of SCC in collaboration with Free Skool Santa Cruz and The Hub, this is a 2-day 2-part training, designed and led by EMTs and street medics, all heavily socialist or anarchist, believing that building our future starts with taking care of each other. Masks STRONGLY encouraged. RSVPs are helpful (if no one signs up it will be postponed) but no one will be turned away.

Learn street medic principles of community aid and medicine + emergency care as community defense and mutual aid, while learning how to help your communities in emergencies such as: blunt-force trauma, major bleeds, overdoses, teargas + pepper spray exposure, gunshots + rubber bullets, heat/cold related condions, strokes, shock, heart attacks, and more! We will be covering CPR and related topics, though this does not replace proper CPR/AED training.

Day 1 (May 9th) will focus more on theory, patient assessment and treatment, while day 2 (May 16th) will be heavily skills-focused, including hands-on training for stop the bleed, transporting/carrying patients, eye rinses, CPR, taking vitals, and more, as well as how to get involved, and covering any topics missed on day 1. Attending both days is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED but we understand that may not be possible for everyone, and encourage you to attend what you can, while acknowledging the content you may have missed can create a gap in knowledge/care, feel free to reach out to see what other opportunities are available, or to work side-by-side with our medics to fill those gaps.

With a focus on community health, liberation, autonomy, and direct action, we strive to bring knowledge to our most vulnerable communities. This workshop does not provide any certification, though it does equip you with the knowledge needed to save a life, as well as knowledge of different programs in the santa cruz area that can help you on your journey as a medic, or in your day-to-day.

This is a pretty basic training, if you have more time to commit to these practices, reach out to us and we can guide you to finding more in-depth training, or work 1on1 with you to build these skills further!

Always NOTAFLOF (no one turned away for lack of funds), but donationed welcome <3 Food provided! (let us know any allergies/restrictions so we can accommodate!) Subrosa is a dry space.

We try to stay committed to accessibility, please reach out to us with any questions or specific needs, and we will try our best to accommodate (and I mean our actual best, not whatever BS people like to do when they say they "try their best")

Come to get linked in with the coalition and our work, and this is a great opportunity to join (though not required) to work with us in the future! You can join anytime by messaging @johnthevase.42 on signal, messsaging @MedicSCC on instagram, reaching Adrian at 650-308-4797, or showing up to any of our events or distributions. There's a space for anyone and everyone, both certified/trained or interested in medicine or not, it truly does take a village to keep our neighbors safe.

Parking: there is metered parking right outside, or the Ace Hardware lot is open, though after two hours they may threaten to tow your car. Since the venue is downtown, truly free parking might be a little bit of a walk. Let us know if you need transportation assistance and we can help (ideally within santa cruz/capitola). The bus also runs very close by!

Venue info:

"SubRosa is part of the Hub Community Center, in downtown Santa Cruz, CA which is the unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma."

"SubRosa is an anarchist community space run by a collective of committed people, from the Santa Cruz County area (and beyond!), freely giving of our energy and time.

"We put our energy into SubRosa to create a vibrant environment, for events, classes and meetings, collaborations and organizing, art and creativity, as well as reading and studying. We offer a selection of radical zines and books and other swag (buttons and patches and tapes etc). Everything is notaflof (no one turned away for lack of funds).

"And check out the Anarchist Lending Library - featuring books on anarchy, Situationists, history, politics, ecology, indigenous studies, feminism and psychology and more, that might not be available in the local library.

"SubRosa also features a variety of events! Bands from all over this continent and beyond have played at SubRosa. Free Skool Santa Cruz has held countless classes inside SubRosa and in the courtyard. The Really Really Free Market has been going every month since 2012! Plus, check out occasional film screening, discussion group and more! "SubRosa is a space to meet people, share resources and ideas, challenge our assumptions and act on our passions.

"As anti-authoritarian space, we strive to create an environment where people are empowered to have interactions based on self-responsibility, mutual respect and free association. We want to create a welcoming space for others who share the goals of diverse community, respect for all forms of life, and freedom from coercive relationships, to foster an environment free from sexism, queer&homophobia, racism, able-ism and other forms of hierarchy. Let’s create together the world(s) we want to live in now.
