Discover how light, shadow, and a roll of film can change the way you see.
Join photographer and printer Carlos de la Sancha at the Bronx Documentary Center for a two-day workshop in black and white film photography. Across two Saturday sessions, learn to use a film camera, understand exposure, and work with light, shadow, and composition to create compelling photographs.
What You’ll Learn
- Film camera fundamentals: Understand aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and how they work together to control exposure.
- Reading light: Explore how natural light, shadows, and contrast shape a black and white photograph.
- Seeing beyond color: Recognize tonal differences, textures, patterns, and shapes that make compelling images.
- Stronger compositions: Use framing, perspective, and subject placement to guide the viewer’s eye.
- Photographing with intention: Practice slowing down, observing your surroundings, and making deliberate choices before pressing the shutter.
Film is included. A limited number of cameras are available for class use.
BDC workshops are open to adults ages 18 and older. For information about discounts for BDC volunteers and Bronx residents, email [email protected].
