A new feature Kiwi film covering a period of tumultuous change and community resistance is seeking to put its profits back into community hands, set in the Waikato region of Naike and Raglan, and Auckland's Bastion Point Ōrākei.
is a comedy-drama focused on two different struggles set in that year - one focused on the real battle over Māori ancestral land and the other, children fighting to save their country school from closure.
A story of community & cultural support and resillience in 1978.
It's been written and directed by Isaac Lee and April Phillips and had its world premiere at the 10th China New Zealand Film Festival and Carnival in Beijing.
But for its release around Aotearoa the filmmakers have partnered with local charities, which will receive 30 percent of ticket sales.
For Isaac, the story is personal - he grew up in a small country school in the 1980s of Naike that eventually closed and has both Māori and Pākehā whakapapa.
