TOPIC: THE BIGGEST TAX SHAKE UP IN A GENERATION
Tax update: CGT reforms, startup concessions, trust tax changes and negative gearing proposals affecting investors and business owners.
The focus on:
- Examples showing the difference between the 50% CGT discount and indexation, and the government’s proposed apportioning method to work out pre- and post-1 July 2027 capital gains;
- The proposed innovative business capital gains tax concession available to founders and investors in certain startups;
- The draft legislation on the proposed minimum 30% tax on discretionary trusts, potential double taxation of corporate beneficiaries, and the ability to make an election to fix income and capital beneficiaries so as to avoid the minimum 30% tax;
- Examples of the removal of negative gearing measure and how it interacts with the CGT changes.
SPEAKER: JULIAN CHENG | PARTNER | GILBERT + TOBIN
Julian is a partner and head of Gilbert + Tobin Tax group.
With over 25 years’ experience, Julian provides tax advisory services to the full spectrum of clients. His clients include public and private corporate groups, fund managers across various asset classes, consortiums and joint ventures and high net worth individuals.
His previous roles included nine years as a tax partner with a big four chartered accounting firm. His time there included two years as head of the firm’s Australian tax desk in New York, providing Australian tax assistance and advice to US corporate groups and funds.
