About this Event
103 FORGE | Initiation à la coutellerie et traitement thermique // Introduction to knife making and Heat Treatment
Cette formation est optionnelle (non-obligatoire) // This training class is not mandatory, only optionnal.
(**** english bellow*** )
Description :

103 | FORGE : Introduction to Knife Making and Heat Treatment
Instructor: Valérie Magoon
Number of participants: 2 people
Course level: Beginner
Course language: French/English
Prerequisite course(s):
101 Forging or 101 RAC Forging + 102 Forging or 102 RAC Forging
OR Proficiency in using the induction forge, belt grinder, oven.
Description:
This course is intended for participants who are already familiar with the use of an induction forge, a belt sander/grinder, and oven.
This is a condensed course that combines hands-on practice and theory to achieve optimal blade geometry. It explains the processes used to refine the grain and produce a high-quality blade through the hardening process—one that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also structurally sound. Common mistakes and pitfalls in heat treatment that should be avoided will be addressed. This training is based on the principle of a forged blade made of plain iron-carbon steel (1075, 1084, 1095, 26C3) and will not cover knives made through stock removal using various alloys that do not respond uniformly to induction heating.
Participants will need to craft the handle on their own at a later time, as this training focuses solely on the forged component.
This training is not mandatory and does not grant access to any Forge workshop resources. You will learn the basics of knife design and heat treatment for cutlery in accordance with best practices and safety standards, enabling you to advance your independent practice.
If none of the announced dates work for you, please contact the committee by email ([email protected]) to explore other options.
The course lasts four (4) hours, but please allow for an additional hour, just in case.
After the workshop, participants will be able to:
This course enables participants to begin crafting a small knife that they can finish on their own using the skills learned and provides a foundation for understanding each stage of the heat treatment process.
Theoretical Components:
- Knife geometry
- Forging a blade
- Heat treatment:
- Annealing (Followed by slow cooling in vermiculite)
- Normalizing (X2 or X3)
- Austenitizing
- Hold Cycle (Soak time)
- Quenching
- Tempering 2 hours (Oven between 350F-400F depending on the desired hardness)
Practical Components:
- Posture at the forge
- Flexible hand movements when holding the hammer
- Thinking of the object in 3D triangles rather than 2D
- The different types of quenching
List of materials provided with registration:
All materials are provided for the course except for clothing. It is mandatory to wear natural-fiber clothing and shoes or boots with steel toe caps. Safety goggles are strongly recommended.
Recommended Clothing:
- Long-sleeved clothing made of natural fibers (jeans, cotton)
- Steel-toed shoes
- Bring a bottle of water
