1000 GHOST HOUSESA photography exhibition and photobook by Dana Langlois
Opening Saturday, 24 October | 4–8 PM
1000 Ghost Houses is a photographic series made in Sihanoukville in early 2024, exploring the city’s unfinished buildings and the communities living within them.
Following an extraordinary construction boom in the years before COVID-19, hundreds of large-scale developments were left unfinished across the city. Some stood empty, while others became informal homes, creating strange intersections between monumental concrete structures and the small details of everyday life.
Langlois’s photographs focus on these spaces and the traces of human presence within them: bedsheets hung for privacy, clothes on wires, chairs, shoes and teapots. People appear, but their faces are rarely visible. Instead, the photographs draw attention to emptiness and occupation, permanence and transience, and the sometimes uneasy relationship between human lives and the larger systems that shape their surroundings.
The unfinished structures are sometimes referred to as “ghost buildings.” In 1000 Ghost Houses, the idea of the ghost shifts towards the people living within them—present, but often unseen.
