About this Event

Moja Arts Collective presents:
100 years of Black Cinema │Body & Soul

Oscar Micheaux’s Body and Soul (1925) is a landmark of early Black independent cinema and one of the surviving works that demonstrates Micheaux’s determination to make films outside the Hollywood system and address issues affecting Black audiences, including class, gender, colorism and social identity. The film is especially significant for introducing the legendary Paul Robeson to the screen, with Robeson delivering a striking dual performance as an escaped convict posing as a preacher and the preacher’s morally upright brother. Paul Robeson's commanding presence gave the film an extraordinary central performance and marked the beginning of a major screen career.

This screening will be followed by a live Cinema Talk exploring the legacy of Oscar Micheaux, Paul Robeson, and the evolution of Black filmmaking.
