This fall, on Saturday, October 24th, in observance of International Karate Day, we invite area dojo to join us for our annual 百錬剛 “Hyaku-Ren-Go” (Train hard 100 times) event, also known as the “100 Kata Challenge.”
The 1936 Karate Meeting (officially called the Gathering of Okinawan Karate Masters) was a historic roundtable hosted by the Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper in Naha, Okinawa. This meeting is widely commemorated today as World Karate Day.
The gathering took place on October 25, 1936, at the Showa Kaikan Hall in Naha City, Okinawa. Its most significant outcome was the decision to change the kanji for “Karate.” Previously, the art was written as 唐手 (“Chinese Hand” or Toudi). The masters officially voted to change it to 空手 (“Empty Hand”), distancing the martial art from its Chinese roots.
