In May, we’re going behind the scenes at the places that keep Sioux Falls running. This week, we’re touring the City’s Water Reclamation Facility.Built between 1980 and 1986, the facility was designed with long-term capacity in mind. It treats domestic, industrial, and commercial wastewater using a multi-step process that removes nearly 99 percent of pollutants before clean water is returned to the Big Sioux River. On average, staff remove close to 32,000 pounds of organic material each day.
The plant can treat up to 21 million gallons of wastewater daily, with the ability to handle even higher peak flows. While stormwater is carried through a separate system, heavy rain can still impact flows due to infiltration into older pipes. The City has invested significantly in infrastructure improvements to reduce this issue and preserve capacity for future growth.
Registration is required, and space is limited to the first 25 participants. If you register, please plan to attend and mark your calendar.
