About this Event
Films of Resistance: Experimental Community Cinema in Bethnal Green
Join Four Corners and Dr Hollie Price from Keele University in St Margaret’s House Chapel for the final event in a series of screenings and conversations exploring the radical history of filmmaking on Roman Road.
In the 1970s and 80s, filmmakers cooperative Four Corners created experimental films whilst running a community cinema and film workshops from their premises – a former grocer’s shop on Roman Road.
These events are inspired by some of the issues addressed in Four Corners' early projects, including women's lives, allotment spaces, experiences of migration, and youth culture. They will explore these themes in dialogue with the present-day and reflect on how they continue to resonate with people living in Tower Hamlets and neighbouring boroughs today.
Yoof! Young people and community filmmaking
We will be screening a part of Don’t Think So (Wilfried Thust/Four Corners1980), which was made during Four Corners’ early workshops for young people held in Oxford House in Bethnal Green. It shows young workshop participants acting out scenes that vividly articulate their everyday lives, worries and identities, exploring teenagers’ lives at home, at school and out with friends.
The excerpt from Don’t Think So will be shown with a selection of videos made in collaboration with young people in the 1970s as part of the Basement Community Arts Project based in St George’s Town Hall, Shadwell.
The films will be followed by a conversation with Maggie Pinhorn (Director of Alternative Arts & founder of the Basement Community Arts Project), and Edwin Mingard (visual artist), closing with a drinks reception.
*This screening is held in collaboration with the London Community Video Archive.
