About this Event
Year 13 Data in Animal Science
Come join us for an exciting event focused on the world of data collection and how it shapes our productive systems and environmental management. The focus will be on animal science and what is measured, how it is measured and what it means. Through animal science, environmental data will also be introduced, and how both areas of data are being used in trails to redesign productive systems for the future.
This in-person event will dive into how both soft data and hard data are being used in the field, how it is collected and some of the wide range of graphs and tables that are used frequently for decision making.
This event is perfect for anyone interested in the intersection of data, science and land management who wants to shape and redesign the world around us.
The following information will be provided...
- Run sheet of the day with timings
- Parking instructions
- A safety plan for the event
- Student handouts
- Pre and post online survey link
Please note: one of the activities is lab based so students need to wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate clothing for the lab environment. Lab coats will be provided.
Safety plan, parking instructions and event overview will be sent via email.
Includes hands-on activities, lab work, trails/ research currently running and a mini-lecture (study options and opportunities at Lincoln University). See agenda below and please note order of the activites can change depending on which of the 3 streams students are in.
Agenda
🕑: 10:00 AM - 10:10 AM
Arrive, walk to activity and toilet break (as required).
🕑: 10:10 AM - 10:55 AM
Stock-taking the Data
Info: Animal Science involves reproductive, behavioural, health and production data. Students will learn about the soft and hard data that is used within animal science including cow collars, reproduction data, and technology that is available. Activities include analysing CT images and body condition scoring sheep models. Note: Body condition scoring is feeling an animal and giving it a grade for how fat or lean it is, which impacts reproductive success.
🕑: 10:55 AM - 11:05 AM
Morning tea, toilet break, walk to activity (20 mins)
🕑: 11:05 AM - 11:50 AM
Seed to Feed: Growing Insights in the Lab
Info: The seed industry grows seed to feed people and animals which makes it an essential part of the Primary Industry. It has been valued at $789 million/ year with annual seed exports accounting for $270 million. This lab explores some of the tests and data that is collected to determine seed quality from harvest to sale ,and what those values mean in terms of financial costs and benefits. this is a tactile hands on lab, and will be held in the lab so closed shoes and appropriate clothing is required. Lab coats will be provided.
🕑: 11:50 AM - 12:00 PM
Walk to centre of campus (for mini-lecture, then lunch)
🕑: 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
Lecture: Study options and opportunities at Lincoln University
Info: Hear about the awesome programs, study options and opportunities that Lincoln University has to offer within Agriculture and Life Sciences; Agriculture and Horticulture, Conservation and Environment, Soils and Food Innovation.
🕑: 12:30 PM - 12:55 PM
Lunch (cashless cafes are on site).
🕑: 12:55 PM - 01:05 PM
Walk to last activity
🕑: 01:05 PM - 01:50 PM
Path-Finding with Data
Info: A game where students are given information and need to decide on the course of action. Depending on their decisions they will either get positive or negative decision-making points depending on the impacts their decision has. Along the way they will encounter careers, and how they interlink and form the land-based community. The game is played in teams of 3, with one person being the runner getting the decision-making cards, another other recording careers with the right description and the third identifying data type with purpose.
🕑: 01:50 PM - 02:00 PM
Walk to the buses and depart
