About this Event
Year 12 AgriScope
Come join us for an exciting day focused on the microscopes in the Primary Sector. The day invites students to look at a range of infomation and visuals that microscopes provide, and how that infomation is used in decision making across a range of sectors and research.
This can be a good introduction or extension for the Biology AS91160, but does not involve assssing the standard. The focus is on the range and varity of microscopic data, rather than the skill of handling a microscope.
The following information will be provided...
- Run sheet of the day with timings
- Parking instructions
- A safety plan for the event
- Student handouts
- Pre and post online survey link
Please note: one of the activities is lab based so students need to wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate clothing for the lab environment. Lab coats will be provided.
Safety plan, parking instructions and event overview will be sent via email.
Includes hands-on activities, lab work and a mini-lecture (study options and opportunities at Lincoln University). See agenda below and please note order of the activites can change.
Agenda
🕑: 10:00 AM - 10:10 AM
Arrive, walk to activity and toilet break (as required).
🕑: 10:10 AM - 10:55 AM
Microscopic Decisions: Seeing the Small, Thinking Big
Info: Students are in teams of three acting as a consultant firm. With context provided, students use images and data, to figure out answers and make decisions to help those in the Primary Sector. Contexts are wide ranging, with interesting visuals and links to some careers available. This activity is student centred and fast paced.
🕑: 10:55 AM - 11:00 AM
Walk to next activity
🕑: 11:00 AM - 11:40 AM
Microscopic Menace: Internal Parasites in Sheep
Info: A deep dive into one particular area where the microscope is a powerful tool. This lesson explores the increase in drench resistance in round worm, what the costs are and how is management (using refugia) the way forward. This case study has similarities to antibiotic resistance which can lead into good classroom discussions.
🕑: 11:40 AM - 12:00 PM
Study options and opportunities at Lincoln University + lunch instructions
Info: An introduction to study options at Lincoln University including what degrees we offer, what is involved in different courses and other opportunities that can arise in the course of study (internships, work experience etc.).
🕑: 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
Lunch (cashless cafes are on site - eftpos/ cards only )
🕑: 12:30 PM - 12:35 PM
Walk to activity
🕑: 12:35 PM - 01:15 PM
Granule Detectives
Info: How do microscopic structures impact the design of common food products, their properties and how that leads to design and taste of food. A focus into the food development and design that students may not think for when they think microscopes.
🕑: 01:15 PM - 01:25 PM
Walk to lecture theatre and toilet break (as required)
🕑: 01:25 PM - 01:50 PM
Lec: Designing & Engineering the Future on a Microscopic Level + post-survey
Info: A mini-lecture on the research occurring to engineer on the microscope level by identifying positive and detrimental micro-organisms, and how the environment is being cultivated to support the positive micro-organisms and retain them.
🕑: 01:50 PM - 02:00 PM
Walk to buses and depart (or depart when it works best for you)
