Five Asian-fronted artists join forces to present Asian American Pie on Saturday, May 11th. This evening of Indie Rock and Pop falls right in the heart of AAPI Heritage Month. From the acoustic soulful harmonies of Beau Frères, the singer-songwriter piano stylings of Garcia, the energetic modern pop of Moonroof, the Beatles-meets-Radiohead rock of Kim, and the unabashed power pop of Faye, each artist will add their own flavor to the mix, showing audiences what it can look like and what it can mean to be an AAPI artist in 2024.
Beau Frères is a solo project spearheaded by Joseph Kim, formerly of local Philly bands, Pale, The Lucys, and The Preacher Curls. Published works are a mix of alt-Americana and power pop, delivering lyrics on larger social commentary and personal, introspective themes. The live act is a mix of originals and inventive covers in a three part harmony arrangement with singers, Dianne Ozambela and Kristen Krebs. Available on all streaming services.
Alyssa Garcia is a Philadelphia based, award-winning artist with a soulful singer-songwriter sound. Living by the mantra “Music is the cure”, she strives to use her original music as an outlet of healing. Garciaʼs music has been featured in films like Netflixʼs The Starling, Getting Grace, Lucky Louie, and more. With a natural gift for storytelling, the Filipino-American creator wears her heart on her sleeve and pens very personal songs she hopes her audience can listen and relate to.
As the lead singer and primary songwriter for The Caulfields,John Faye was one of the only mixed-race Asian Americans to sign a major label recording contract in the 1990ʼs heyday of alternative rock. The band released two albums on A&M Records, had a modern rock radio hit in the US, Canada, and Australia (“Devilʼs Diary”), and toured nationally and internationally. During his three-decade career in the Philadelphia music scene, Faye also led the indie bands IKE, John & Brittany, and John Faye and Those Meddling Kids. John has shared stages with over 60 national acts, including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees REM, Bon Jovi, Bo Diddley, and the Ramones. Johnʼs memoir, The Yin and the Yang of it All: Rock ʼnʼ
Roll Memories from the Cusp, as told by a Mixed-Up, Mixed-Race Kid, published in 2023 by Advantage/Forbes, is an Amazon #1 Best Seller. Faye plans to release his first full-length album in nine years in the fall of 2024, with single releases scheduled throughout the spring and summer.
The word “underdog” can be synonymous with Philadelphia. Coupled with being a minority, this is the story oJfudah Kim. He is a proud Asian American Vocalist / Songwriter / Multi instrumentalist / Producer from The City of Brotherly Love. His music ranges from intimate and introspective to playful and visceral - all while maintaining a sound tethered to Indie / Alternative Rock. Having proud immigrant parents who accomplished so much through tireless self reliance, Kim has adopted that work ethic and pride into his craft and his career. With no label and no management, Judah Kim has been able to book international tours, achieve FM radio play, and license his music to various television shows worldwide including 90210, ABC X Games and Geordie Shore. Noted producers / engineers on some of his work include Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz), and Simon Gibson (Abbey Road Studios). Judah Kim was the songwriter and vocalist for Indie Rock outfits Stonethrown, and Judah Kim & the Assassination. Judah Kim is currently working on a new record.
Moonroof is a Philadelphia-based band that plays upbeat, catchy indie rock and alt-pop. Moonroof have been making waves in the indie-pop scene since their 2018 debut. With over 5 million streams on Spotify alone, Moonroof has shared the stage with indie heavyweights The Lumineers, Death Cab for Cutie, and Grouplove. The band consists of lead singer Dave Kim, drummer Dan Rendine, guitarist Johnny Fordyce, and bassist Kevin Randolph. The bandʼs music has been played on Philadelphia-area radio stations Alt 104.5 and WXPN. They have a strong social media following with engaged fans.
