EVENT DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY:
Celebrate Earth Day with Women Who Explore in partnership with the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library and the Tierra Sagrada Seed Library for a hands-on evening of planting, learning, and connection.
What We’ll Do
- Make biodegradable newspaper pots
- Fill them with nutrient-rich compost from the City of Las Cruces
- Plant beans, squash, and corn using the traditional Three Sisters method
- Learn how to grow and care for these plants at home
You’ll leave with planted pots ready to grow.
About the Tierra Sagrada Seed Library
The Tierra Sagrada Seed Library is a free community seed-sharing program housed inside Thomas Branigan Memorial Library.
It allows residents to:
- Check out seeds
- Grow them at home
- Save and return seeds to keep the cycle going
The program supports biodiversity, culturally significant crops, and community education around gardening and seed saving.
About the Compost
We’ll be using compost created locally through the City of Las Cruces green waste program.
- Yard waste is diverted from the landfill
- It is transformed into nutrient-rich compost
- Compost is made available to the public for free
By planting shared seeds in city-made compost, we are participating in a truly local cycle of sustainability.
The Three Sisters Tradition
The Three Sisters method pairs corn, beans, and squash in a system of mutual support:
- Corn provides structure for beans to climb
- Beans enrich the soil
- Squash shades the ground to retain moisture
It’s a beautiful reminder that we grow stronger together.
Important Note
This event is hosted at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. While this is a Women Who Explore event focused on building connection among women, the library is a public space. If visitors (men, children, other women) are present and interested in participating, they may join us.
