About this Event
Breaking the Vault: From Northern New Mexico to the National Stage
Join us for an evening with Honorable Laura M. Montoya, the first elected Latina State Treasurer in United States history. In this keynote, Treasurer Montoya shares her journey from being raised and educated in Northern New Mexico to overseeing a $19.6 billion investment portfolio.
Learn how she is "breaking the vault" of traditional finance by championing financial fitness for students, launching innovative initiatives like Baby Bonds, and ensuring that New Mexico’s $160 billion in public funds are managed with a relentless focus on equity and opportunity for the next generation.
Beyond her statewide advocacy, Treasurer Montoya is actively shaping the future of the profession by partnering with New Mexico State University (NMSU) and the University of New Mexico (UNM) to develop a specialized academic concentration in government budgeting, investing, and accounting. This collaboration ensures that New Mexico’s students are not just spectators of the state’s financial success, but the architects of its future.
