Learn how to recognize and nurture a healthy worm population in your garden and compost pile
About this Event

Join us for an interactive, hands-on, practical discussion of the wonderful world of Vermiculture.

Learn the differences between earthworms and composting worms and the incredible benefits each species brings to your garden.

Participants will leave the workshop with an enlightened understanding of the two types ofearthworms common in Montana gardens and will be left to consider the rationale for why these invasive creatures may be your garden’s greatest ally. Workshoppers may also leave with a container of worms eggs and castings, as some will be available.

Dig it.

~part of our Heritage Skills Workshop series~

Rod Daniel has spent the last 34 years studying, observing, and nurturing both earthworms and composting worms in the Bitterroot Valley. In an interactive and sometimes irreverent

discussion, Rod will share his knowledge and experience of worm history, ecology, and

reproduction and will offer practical tips on how best to gently manage worms to the benefit of

your garden soil and lawn.

Rod has a BA in Botany from the University of Montana and worked with farmers and gardeners

as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa before settling in the Bitterroot Valley. He worked at

Lifeline Produce for two seasons and three years at Garden City Seeds before starting his own

small vegetable and herb farm. As a Sanitarian evaluating soils for septic drain fields, Rod has

observed hundreds of 8’ deep soil profiles throughout Ravalli County which has given him a

worm’s-eye view of the valley’s underworld.
