Seeing, feeling, and being the world with female mystics.
In the minds of many Christian mystics, there is a very close relationship between sight and touch: to see something is to have it make an impression upon your soul. For mystics like Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Ávila, and Julian of Norwich, this deeply relational interaction occurs not just between humans, but forms the basis of how they understand themselves and the more-than-human world around them.
In this workshop we will explore how we can use creative arts methods to revive this sense of seeing as feeling, as touching and being touched. Combining aspects of these women’s mystical practices with actions of drawing, painting, writing, and movement, the session aims to rekindle our sense of connection with and care for the world we belong to.
Dr. Harri Hudspith, Associate Lecturer in Visual Culture at the University of the West of England, is an artist and practice-based researcher who uses drawing, writing, installation, and performance to think about histories and questions of language, body, and knowledge.
