What to Expect:
Day 1 | Scaling a drawing: The Grid Method. How to use a grid to draw from a photographic reference at any size while maintaining the correct proportions.
Day 2 | Free hand drawing, basic structure and proportions of the head. A constructive method to find the placement of the elements of the face: breaking down the individual facial features, eyes, nose and mouth, how to see and represent them and how to relate them to each other within the general structure of the face.
Day 3 | Line and contour drawing. How to represent each element of the face at different angles and how they align within the face as a whole. Introduction to sculpting shadows.
Day 4 | Shadow mapping method and tonal values for creating dimensionality. How to go beyond the constructive method and build a more intuitive approach, starting from the shadows rather than the lines.
Day 5 | Additive method vs. Subtractive method (with live model). After previously tackling portraits by “adding” tones and lines on blanc paper, this time we will “subtract” values by removing material from a toned down paper to create lights and form. Adding darker pencil and charcoal marks will complete the drawing at the end.
Day 6 | Self-portrait by the mirror. Capturing your own likeness and giving it character and life.
Materials:
All essential materials will be provided, with optional materials available for a fee. Participants are also welcome to bring any materials they feel comfortable using.
