A hands-on workshop with artist Catherine Rye. Create a beautiful book to help you collect and preserve your own botanical specimens.
About this Event

This is an in-person workshop at the Linnean Society.

Botanical Impressions is a hands-on, three-hour creative workshop inspired by the Linnean Society’s longstanding traditions of botanical observation, classification, and specimen record-keeping.

During the session, we will create a flag-style accordion book celebrating native British leaves through mono printing, leaf rubbings, annotation, and careful scientific curiosity—echoing the practices found in the Society’s herbarium and historical field notebooks.

The pages of your book will be made from envelopes, giving plenty of room to add further material, notes, and ephemera over time. All materials are provided.

We will also look at simple ways to preserve leaves and enjoy a short introduction to identifying native trees.

One of the highlights of the workshop will be the chance to view selected items from the Society’s collection, offering rare insight and inspiration from centuries of botanical study.

Catherine Rye is an artist based in Oxfordshire with a special interest in using plants as artistic material and in the ways naturalists have historically sought to understand and categorise the natural world. She works in textiles, printmaking and book forms, and exhibits regularly during Oxfordshire Artweeks.

She shares her inspirations and techniques on her website and YouTube channel, A Creative Garden.

Please note that this workshop is held in a room reached by a small staircase. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
