The CSW70 side event, Women’s Leadership in the Digital Era: Advancing Access to Justice in Online Political Spaces, responds to a shared global reality: as conflicts intensify, democratic systems strain, and political debate increasingly shifts online, digital spaces are being weaponized in ways that disproportionately target women in public life. The event brings forward alumni of the UNDP’s Leadership Academy for Women in the Digital Era, representing electoral management bodies, national human rights institutions, civil society reform leaders, digital governance practitioners, and conflict-response actors across Ukraine, Palestine, Jordan, Mexico, and Morocco.
The leaders represent interconnected institutional entry points, electoral oversight bodies, national human rights institutions, civil society reform movements, digital governance actors, and conflict-response systems, reflecting the reality that safeguarding women’s political participation in the digital era requires coordinated action across electoral management, justice frameworks, regulatory systems, and civic space. In contexts marked by active conflict, democratic strain, or institutional reform, digital political violence is not only personal harm; it is a structural barrier to women’s full and effective participation in public life and a direct threat to democratic resilience.
