About this Event
A show by Kate Valentine.
A Woman of a Certain Rage is a righteous menopausal mood swing. This one woman show blends hilarity and heartrending trauma into nothing short of a call to action. Written and performed by NYC comedian and actor Kate Valentine.
Kate Valentine (playwright/actor)
is one of the instigators of the feminist neo-burlesque movement. Her show, the vaudeville extravaganza The Va Va Voom Room and her hilariously deadpan mistress of ceremonies character Miss Astrid rode a zeitgeist beginning in the mid 1990’s in Los Angeles. The popularity of The Va Va Voom Room hit its apex as a weekly variety show featuring hundreds of noted striptease dancers, musicians, and variety artists running at the beloved cabaret space Fez Under Time Café in NYC. Miss Astrid traveled all over the US and the globe entertaining audiences with her quick improvisational wit and sexy style.
Concurrently, Ms. Valentine wrote and starred in many sketch comedy shows featuring her hilarious characters at various venues in NYC. In addition, she performed in, directed and created works of experimental dance theatre. She also came to specialize in developing and directing original one person shows. This included the one man show of Ed Hamell entitled The Terrorism of Everyday Life, which won a Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Festival.
Credits include The Velvet Hammer (dancer/ El Rey, Los Angeles), Stanley Love Performance Group (Dancer, various) Love Guts Cha Cha Cha (dancer, PS 122), Rite Of Spring (dancer, NY LiveArts), The Hive (writer/actor/director , Galapagos) The Baby Daddy Show (writer/actor, various), I Am the Moon and You are the Man on Me (Director, PS 122) Divine Comedy of an Exquisite Corpse (Director, PS 122) Sex Crimes Cabaret (Director, Soho Playhouse ) One Man Show (Director, Joe’s Pub) The Terrorism of Everyday Life, (director, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Soho Playhouse, London). In film, Rant and Roll (director) and Alone Together (director). She has received grants from the Brooklyn Arts Council and ArtsWestchester.
For the last decade Ms. Valentine’s primary work has been in the creation and development of two children. These years in the diaper trenches have provided her with loads of new insights and material. A Woman of a Certain Rage marks Kate Valentine’s joyous return to the stage and her first full length solo show. This show once again captures a zeitgeist as Ms. Valentine speaks for Gen X women entering menopause and refusing to become invisible in middle age.
