Celebrate the launch of Issue 3 of Translator Magazine with an evening of readings and carefully chosen wine pairings.
About this Event

Good stories taste better with good wine. Come and celebrate the launch of Translator Issue #3 with an evening of readings, carefully chosen wine pairings, and the pleasure of hearing great journalism read aloud.

Translator is a magazine of translated journalism and reportage from around the world, for the open-minded and the language-curious. We find the best non-fiction writing from beyond the Anglosphere and bring it into English – stories that would otherwise pass you by.

The Translator team will read from the pieces they've selected and translated for Issue #3, taking you from the murky depths of European waterways to the hidden history of Cold War gaming, with further dispatches from Kyoto, Bangalore, and Guangxi Province – the autonomous Zhuang region in China.

Your ticket includes two glasses of wine (75ml each), each paired with a piece from the issue:

Glass one: Verdicchio & Chardonnay, La Calcinara, Marche, Italy

Somewhere beneath European rivers, eels are disappearing – and nobody wants to talk about why. Sip a coastal blend from the Adriatic shore of Le Marche as we read this richly reported investigation into collapsing ecosystems, shadowy supply chains, and one of nature's most enigmatic creatures. Its salinity and depth were made for a story about what lurks beneath.
Reported in Italian for Il Post, translated by Bartolomeo Sala.

Glass two: Hárslevelű 2020, Apátsági, Somló, Hungary
Behind the Iron Curtain, a generation of bedroom programmers was quietly building the future of video games. We pair this dazzling piece of cultural history that spans the Rubik's Cube to Ecco the Dolphin, with a glass from Somló, one of Hungary's most ancient volcanic wine regions, where Apátsági farms just 3 hectares on the hill. The same soil as the story.

Reported in Hungarian for EPER, translated by Áron Rossman-Kiss.
