About this Event
Wilderness Union, Toronto's outdoor adventure crew, is hosting a day of free events across the city to celebrate the launch of our new free, . Join us for and learn why adventure is closer than you think.
Knots are one of those skills that look like party tricks until the moment they aren't. A storm rolls in and you need a tarp up fast. A pot of water needs to hang over the fire. A boat gets pinned in a rapid and suddenly the difference between stuck and unstuck is a length of rope and the right system.
In this hands-on, hour-long workshop, WU guide Yahia will walk you through the knots, hitches, and anchors that actually earn their place in your kit. We'll move through a real backcountry story together, learning each knot in the moment you'd actually need it:
- Setting up camp in the rain (friction hitches, tarp lines, clothesline rigs)
- Boiling water over the fire the next morning (prusiks and mid-rope loops)
- Building anchors and running a Z-drag to rescue a pinned boat (the grand finale that ties everything together, literally)
You'll leave knowing your figure 8, figure 8 on a bight, alpine butterfly, prusik, water knot, and how to think about hitches, mid-rope knots, and anchors as a system rather than a checklist.
Your guide: Yahia
Yahia is an outdoor educator and tripping guide with five years in the field, teaching youth climbing, rappelling, belaying, and knot-tying both at challenge courses and out on the cliff. He's also a whitewater canoeist who's spent plenty of time getting beginner friends comfortable, capable, and stoked on the river. His certifications include:
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
- ACCT Level 2 (Challenge Course Technician)
- Whitewater Rescue Technician (WRT)
His goal for this clinic is simple: make knot knowledge functional and contextual, so you walk out of Fjällräven with skills you'll actually use the next time you're outside.
The perks
- Discounted shopping at Fjällräven Queen West for all attendees
- Another stamp in your Adventure Passport, which means a patch waiting for you at MEC later in the day
- A small, hands-on group with real rope in your hands the whole time
Bring your curiosity. We'll bring the rope.
