WHALE FALLWritten and Directed by Sam Nichols
SYNOPSIS:
Somewhere in the hadalpelagic zone, the deepest and darkest part of the sea, a god wakes up. Swept through currents by a school of devoted acolytes, this newly appointed messiah is set on a pilgrimage to heal a dead world back with miracles. But how far can faith go before what's left is nothing but fear?
WHALE FALL is an abstract, movement-based play that entertains genres of horror and existentialism to tackle the themes of religious fanaticism, echoism, abuse and idolisation. Set in a dark, oceanic world, this atmospheric performance blurs the line between reality and dream to depict a tale of mythology and humanity.
CONTENT WARNING:
The text WHALE FALL revolves around sensitive themes such as echoism, allusions to physical/emotional/sexual abuse, suicide/suicidal ideation, death, religious fanaticism and graphic imagery. As such concepts may be distressing to viewers, please be mindful and take care of yourself. No art is worth more than you.
SHOW DATES:
April 6th & 13th (SUNDAY)
April 9th, 10th & 11th (LUNCHTIME)
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
All characters in “WHALE FALL” are genderless and thus referred to with they/them pronouns.
THE QUESTION – The predecessor to our new Whale Fall and an echo of something long past or perhaps to come. The performer for THE QUESTION may lend their bodies to the physicality of THE SWARM, THE LIGHT and THE LURE. Performed by a single actor.
WHALE FALL – The protagonist and newly ordained god of this oceanic world which our audience follows. They are silent and passive for most of the show until the final scene. Performed by a single actor.
THE SWARM – A school of small, excitable fish who completely devote themselves to the word of Whale Fall. They often speak over one another and will talk directly after each other, as if they hold a single consciousness. The actors for THE SWARM also lend their bodies to the physicality of THE LIGHT and THE LURE. Performed by 3 actors.
THE LIGHT – An ancient anglerfish, once of guidance now wasted away in the dark. Wracked with regret and loneliness, they are unable to chase away their hunger and desire for devotion. Vocally performed by a single actor, but physically performed by 4 actors (including THE SWARM).
THE LURE – An octopus sequestered to the edge of the world out of duty and isolation with a desperate need for touch. Any unlucky soul roaming in their depths is caught within their web to be toyed with and tormented. Vocally performed by a single actor, but physically performed by 4 actors (including THE SWARM).
