Watercolor Exploratory Series
This three part watercolor series offers a gentle introduction to watercolor through experimentation and discovery. It is designed to be welcoming and beginner friendly, with plenty of room to explore at your own pace. The only thing required is your presence.
Using a limited palette and simple tools, you will explore how watercolor behaves through color mixing, flowing washes, texture techniques, and simple line work.
Together we’ll focus on a different aspect of watercolor while building familiarity with the materials over time. The focus is on exploration rather than getting things "right". You're welcome to attend a single session or come to all three. If you join the series, you'll build familiarity with the same color palette and techniques over time.
All materials provided.
Session 1 (March 29 1-3PM)
Color & Water | Come spend an afternoon exploring how watercolor behaves.
In this session, you'll experiment with mixing colors and observing how pigment moves through water. Using a small, harmonious color palette, you’ll then explore simple watercolor techniques that focus on movement and transparency, blending and flow.
You will leave with:
• A personal watercolor color reference sheet
• An exploratory watercolor painting
• Greater familiarity with watercolor materials
Session 2 (April 19 1-3PM)
Texture & Surface | Explore the textures watercolor can create using simple tools and techniques.
In this session, you'll experiment with creating textures by using salt, bubble wrap, cling wrap, bamboo skewer carving, and more to discover how watercolor responds to different techniques.
We'll build upon the previous color palette to keep the focus on exploration rather than complexity.
You’re welcome to bring small twigs, a feather, dried flowers, or anything else you would be curious to try creating textures with.
Returning participants are welcome to bring their color mixing reference sheets, though no previous experience is required.
You will leave with:
• Expanded familiarity with watercolor techniques
• More confidence experimenting
• New ways to create pattern and variation
• Optional additions to their color reference sheet
Note: New participants will receive their own personal watercolor color reference sheet
Session 3 (May 3rd 1-3PM)
Shape & Line | Bring gentle structure to watercolor through simple shapes and pen details that respond to the paint. In this watercolor session, we'll explore how simple shapes and line work can bring gentle structure to loose watercolor painting.
You will create flowing watercolor forms using a limited palette, then add pen details that respond to shapes and patterns discovered in the paint.
This session brings together techniques from earlier workshops but works equally well as a standalone experience. No drawing experience is required.
Participants will leave with:
• A completed mixed media watercolor piece
• Greater confidence working with watercolor
• Expanded understanding of composition and line
• Optional additions to their color reference sheet
Note: New participants will receive their own personal watercolor color reference sheet.
All sessions are relaxed, beginner friendly, and focused on exploration rather than perfection. All materials are provided.
