MacArthur Elementary opened in the fall of 1969. It was built at the same time as the original Baird Elementary and Martin Elementary. All three schools were built using similar specifications, with two or three instructional pods grouped around an open instructional area. Flexibility was the key to the design. Furniture, storage units and room dividers were movable as part of what was called an open school concept. Over the years, this approach was reevaluated, and the spaces were converted to traditional facilities with separate classrooms. MacArthur Elementary was named in honor of General Douglas MacArthur, a noted military leader who grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
For the 2026-27 school year, MacArthur Elementary will be consolidated with Starr Elementary and King Elementary.
