Make small scrolls with Washi — from crafting cover and end papers, to the final assembly. You will go home with 2 finished scroll books!
About this Event

In this full day workshop, artist Daniel Etigson, will guide you through the creation of two richly coloured small scrolls using Moriki Kozo, Kozuke, and Mitsumata Iron Oxide Pink paper, a Heritage Washi. These small scrolls will measure 4”x45” and 6”x40.”

Small scrolls originated in medieval Japan as illustrated narrative texts meant to be read in one sitting. They were traditionally 4-7” in height and up to 590” long. They combined storytelling with visual art. In medieval Japan, they were referred to as ko-e, which translates literally as “small pictures.”

All tools and materials will be provided by The Japanese Paper Place and your instructor.

Participants are asked to bring the following:
  • a notebook and pen
  • your lunch
