Screening as part of Walled Cities 8, King Frankie tells the story of Frankie Burke (Peter Coonan), a kindly taxi driver living a quiet life in a Dublin suburb, who is forced to confront the ghosts of his past when an unexpected stranger arrives at his door.
Following the death of his father, King Frankie explores the life of Dublin taxi driver Franke Burke through both sides of the Celtic Tiger financial period of growth and subsequent crash of 2008. The Celtic Tiger here acts as the temporal wall between the before and after, the divide comes with two side of an economic divide, between prosperity and austerity. This film explores grief, purpose and how the past can come back to haunt you.
The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Dr Gul Kacmaz Erk, Lead for Architecture and Planning at Queen’s University, Belfast. Gul will be joined by special guests Dermot Malone (Director) and Alice Poole (Queen’s Architecture Researcher) to offer their insights into the film.
This event is part of CACity presents: Walled Cities 8, a short film season exploring political conflict in divided communities and walled cities around the world. Presented by CACity (Cinema and Architecture in the City) Research Group, in collaboration with Queen’s University. The film screenings will be accompanied by an exhibition of film locations from both Dublin and Belfast, mapped and analysed by Alice Poole and Ece Sila Bora.
