About this Event
In the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, the Nag’s Head shopping area of Holloway was often affectionately referred to as “The Oxford Street Of The North”.
Find out how the area evolved to become North London's go-to shopping district offering the best selection of well-known names, impressive independent outlets, beautiful restaurants and top-end entertainment, all accessed by excellent road and rail services including one mode of transport that was quite unique.
We'll look at the remains of beautiful shop fronts to consider the impressive window displays that would have been arranged behind curved glass, framed with polished brass and hand-painted signage, with courteous staff in immaculate white starched aprons. See and hear evidence of palatial variety theatres, gin palaces, tea rooms, banqueting halls and the early labyrinthine department stores.
Learn how one much-loved and much-missed department store grew to be one of the best known shops in North London, succeeding into the twentieth century. And find out about its friendly rival just around the corner which was an even larger, more impressive and, possibly, more successful establishment at that time.
I've lived here for over 25 years and I am fascinated at how the area continues to adapt and thrive. Today's Holloway may not be as visually impressive as it was 100 years ago but it’s still got a plenty to offer and everything I need can still be purchased locally in amongst those hints of history hiding in plain view.
- The tour starts and ends near Holloway Road tube station.
- The specific meeting point will be clearly described in words at the bottom of your confirmation, ticket(s) and reminders which will be sent via email after purchase.
- Please do not rely on maps/info given by other non-Eventbrite apps as these can often be incorrect or mis-leading.

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. – in fact, the research never ends. The tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely intrigued by – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture on our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them.
