Discover the City's rich literary heritage, from a pub frequented by Dr Johnson and Dickens, to the site of Oscar Wilde's notorious trials
About this Event

Starting in the beautiful setting of Lincoln's Inn, where the poet John Donne studied law and organised wild parties, we wend our way through atmospheric alleyways and hidden courtyards to follow in the footsteps of writers such as Dr Johnson, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and the Bronte sisters. Hear about: Dr Johnson's beloved cat, Hodge; Wilde's sensational legal trials; an ancient artefact with a link to Agatha Christie; the men who created Shakespeare's First Folio; and an awkward encounter between Charlotte Bronte and her literary hero.

Please note that the tour is all outside and will take place whatever the weather, so please wear suitable clothing and shoes. It takes two hours and we will set off promptly so please arrive on time. There are some steps and uneven pavements.

Meet outside Brew Garden cafe, 337-338 High Holborn, WC1V 7PX

Here are some reviews from happy customers on Footprints of London's TripAdvisor page:

"We went on The Literary City tour by Jenny Mill. It was fantastic. Jenny's tour was a lovely route combining places of literary interest with gorgeous little green spaces and quiet spots, which we will revisit. She spoke loudly and clearly and presented just the right amount of information."

"I booked a private Literary City tour, as it wasn’t scheduled for the day I was in town. I’m so glad that Jenny was able to accommodate us for the tour! I’m a British Lit PhD student and Jenny had plenty to teach me. She also did a great job of explaining She’s incredibly patient, kind, and knowledgeable—highly recommend :)"
