Join us as we welcome award-winning author and poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai to Chicago in conversation with Randy Kim, writer and speaker. Their conversation will explore Nguyễn’s novels,The Mountains Sing and Dust Child, which address intergenerational trauma and hardships from the war and the Vietnamese diaspora and the legacy of Vietnamese-Americans 50 years after the end of the US-Vietnam War. Nguyễn will also be discussing her latest project, The Color of Peace, her debut poetry collection in English. Together, Nguyễn and Kim will discuss the power of storytelling in shaping our community’s past, present, and future. Born and raised in Việt Nam, Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai is the author of thirteen books in Vietnamese and English, most recently the global bestselling novels The Mountains Sing and Dust Child, and the forthcoming poetry book The Color of Peace. Her writing has been translated into more than twenty-five languages and has received the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award, the International Book Award, the BookBrowse Best Debut Award, the Lannan Literary Fellowship in Fiction as well as Runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. She was named by Forbes Việt Nam as one of 20 inspiring women of 2021. She has a Ph.D in Creative Writing from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai sinh ra và lớn lên ở Việt Nam. Cô đã vượt qua rất nhiều khó khăn để dành học bổng toàn phần từ chính phủ Australia năm 1993. Sau khi làm việc nhiều năm trong lĩnh vực thúc đẩy phát triển bền vững, cô trở lại ước mơ thời thơ ấu – viết văn – khi bước sang tuổi 33. Cô sáng tác bằng cả tiếng Việt và tiếng Anh, và là tác giả của 13 cuốn sách ở các thể loại tiểu thuyết, thơ, du ký và truyện dài. Randy Kim is a queer Viet-Khmer American with a Masters in Nonprofit Management at DePaul University. He currently works in development for a nonprofit. Randy was a creator and host of his award-winning podcast "The Banh Mi Chronicles.” He was the award recipient of this year’s 30th annual Communicator Awards. His podcast has been mentioned by Apple Podcast, National Geographic Society, and the Asian American Journalist Association. He is the founder of his current Substack newsletter, “Banh Mi Bites” which explores conversations with BIPOC creatives and more. Randy formerly served as a board member with The National Cambodian Heritage Museum in Chicago and is now serving as a board member with the Vietnamese Association of Illinois.
