Voices of the LandWhat is the sound of Aotearoa?
Is it the rhythm of waves rolling onto the shore, the wind moving through the ngahere, the chorus of summer cicadas, or the clear call of a tūī echoing through the forest? Perhaps it’s the flutter of a pīwakawaka, the slow wingbeat of a kererū, or the quiet movement of water flowing through rivers and streams.
Voices of the Land is an immersive, multi-sensory exhibition by Brazilian-born artist Noila Souza (Alion) in collaboration with photographer James Fleming. Together, they invite visitors to experience the sounds, images, and sensations that shape the living atmosphere of Aotearoa.
In this exhibition, Noila Souza presents her bold pop-contemporary artistic vision of Aotearoa, expressed through vibrant colours, playful forms, and large-scale paintings inspired by the energy and spirit of the natural world. Her work transforms landscapes, birds, and natural elements into joyful visual compositions that celebrate the vitality of New Zealand’s environment.
Alongside these works, James Fleming’s photography brings a powerful sense of realism and presence, capturing the raw beauty and quiet moments of Aotearoa’s landscapes and wildlife. His images offer an intimate glimpse into the natural world, grounding the exhibition in the authentic textures, light, and atmosphere of the land.
Together, their work is brought to life through an immersive soundscape that weaves together ocean waves, birdsong, cicadas, wind through the forest, and flowing water — creating a sensory environment where visitors are invited not just to look, but to listen.
As audiences move through the space, they become part of the installation itself, awakening layers of sound and atmosphere that reveal the many voices of Aotearoa.
Voices of the Land is an invitation to pause, listen, and experience the living soundscape of New Zealand — a place where colour, image, and sound come together to celebrate the unique spirit of this land.
