Learn how to identify 20 species of snakes (and how to tell which ones are venomous). The class covers “snake season” safety and an overview of ethical snake spotting, including information about improving your chances of seeing a snake in the park. After the classroom portion, go on a short, guided hike for some field practice. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet the instructor’s ambassador snakes! This class takes place in the Black Rock area of Joshua Tree National Park, with the classroom portion held in the Black Rock Nature Center. Anyone may attend! No experience or expertise is required. Park pass not included and not required for this area of the park. No meals or equipment are provided. The indoor portion of this class is ADA accessible. It requires very little travel with ADA accommodations, such as accessible parking, available. This outdoor portion is easy. It requires approximately 1/2 mile of walking with limited elevation gain on somewhat variable terrain and/or more than one hour outdoors in the elements. Please email [email protected] if you need specific accommodations. Meet Your Instructor! Paisley Ramstead is a longtime desert resident who combines a deep passion for creativity with a strong love for the unique wildlife of the region — particularly snakes. Fascinated by these often-misunderstood creatures, she spends much of her time exploring the desert landscape, observing and learning about its diverse reptile population. When she’s not out in the field snake-spotting, Paisley channels her artistic energy into creating intricate collages inspired by the natural world around her. At home, Paisley enjoys the company of her dogs, finding comfort and companionship in their presence after a day of outdoor adventures. She is also an avid thrifter, frequently searching for vintage field guides and other treasures that reflect her love for both history and nature. Paisley’s blend of artistic creativity, wildlife enthusiasm, and desert living brings a distinct perspective to her work and life, making her a passionate advocate for the desert environment she calls home. Equipment list: A minimum of 2 to 3 liters of water, food and snacks, closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking boots — no sandals are permitted, including hiking sandals, sun protection, including hat, sunglasses, sunscreen — light-colored long-sleeved shirts are recommended, daypack to carry equipment and personal items (optional), notebook and writing utensil.
