When Clark County Public Arts commisions a mural spread across 21 concrete pillars at the Pearson Center, California artists Mike Norice create a design that reflects the historic neighboorhood around the building (the Westside of Las Vegas). With the guidance of UNLV historian Claytee White, the project theme beautifully displays an “uplifting historic legacy”. The journey of the Historic Westside does include unfavorable moments of trauma and despair. The first communities of Nuwu, Southern Paiute People were forcibly dispersed by European colonization. Then, with American discrimination and segregation, African Americans ended up becoming a majority population in the area with nowhere else to go. Through 1865-2025, the documentary features the intergenerational greatness of African Americans in Las Vegas. They are pivotal to the world-class destination of Las Vegas with over 100 years of history. The film is in memory of Stan Armstrong, Melvin “Beetle” Ennis, Edna Stovall, and Charlene Smith.

About Zachary Fried:Zachary Fried is a nonprofit and arts professional with a focus on philanthropic initiatives. A featured filmmaker and entrepreneur at the 2024 Vegas Eccentric Arts Fest, he is a college graduate with academic honors and has received public service recognitions from Senator Valerie Wiener and Congressman Steven Horsford. His work has been featured on platforms like Vegas PBS’s Nevada Week, and he collaborates with organizations including Raw Femme, Shade Tree, the Vegas Centennial Commission, and the Nevada Association of Purchasing Professionals.
