About this Event
Free Speech Is Dead Long. Long Live Free Speech.
The classic defense of free speech assumes we're all playing the same game—that we share basic standards of evidence, that good faith debate is possible, that persuasion can happen. But what if those preconditions are gone? We now have separate facts, separate media ecosystems, and separate definitions of what counts as harm. The marketplace of ideas only works if buyers and sellers share a currency. Maybe free speech isn't under attack—maybe it's just broken, a principle designed for a world that no longer exists.
Or maybe that's exactly backwards. Shared values were always a myth—or worse, a way for whoever held power to set the terms. Free speech isn't a reward for agreement; it's the mechanism for working through disagreement. Waiting for consensus before we protect open debate is just handing the microphone to whoever's already in charge. Join us for a debate on whether free speech can survive without a shared foundation—or whether demanding that foundation is itself the threat. Two debaters, opposing sides, to be announced closer to the date.
- 30 minutes of mingling with beer and wine
- One 30 minute moderated conversation with two experts who disagree
- One 25 minute small group discussions with two key questions
- After party at a nearby dive
UNMUTED is a discussion forum for the politically curious. Open-minded is the name of the game. Join your people.
