About this Event

As part of 19th International James Joyce Symposium, the University of Glasgow, Chamber Music Scotland and the Irish Consulate present:

James Joyce and Music: Two Tenors at Twilight

You are warmly invited to join us for an evening of song and musical performances relating to the work of the Irish writer James Joyce. This recital begins with a musical celebration of the occasion in 1904 when the young Joyce shared a stage in the Antient Concert Rooms at Dublin with John McCormack (the most famous Irish tenor of the twentieth century). In memory of this, our event features performances by Christian Schneeberger, prize-winning graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and member of Scottish Opera, alongside Aidan Phillips, a current emerging talent from the Alexander Gibson Opera School at the Conservatoire.

These two tenors will lead us through James Joyce’s musical favourites: from songs that Joyce and John McCormack performed by Arthur Sullivan, to songs that Joyce incorporated in his writing.

Expert accompaniment will be provided by Derek Clark (former Head of Music at Scottish Opera and an accomplished conductor and composer) on the piano. Joyce and music expert Professor Michelle Witen (Head of the Centre for Irish Studies at Europa-Universität Flensburg) will supply a lively commentary and biographical information about the repertoire.

The evening will conclude by showcasing pieces by composers and musicians who have, in turn, set Joyce’s works to music. (This will include the world premiere of settings by Clark and by Gareth Williams.)
