Exploring Barriers to Care and Cultural Dynamics Refugee Populations Face in the United States
About this Event

Many refugees have experienced trauma related to war, disaster, mass migration, gendered violence, persecution, or torture coupled with the trauma of the resettlement journey itself. Cultural beliefs and practices significantly influence the health behaviors of refugees impacting their access to healthcare services including the treatment of trauma. Language and cultural differences make it difficult for refugees to convey their health or psychological needs and understand medical advice as well as hindering effective communication with providers. Stigma around mental health within the refugee community can prevent individuals from seeking help for psychological concerns. Providing culturally appropriate care integrating client values, complementary cultural practices, trauma informed interpretation, concrete social services, and services focused on well-being will reduce barriers and improve client care.

We are sorry, but due to the proprietary nature of the material presented, we don't record our trainings.
