Toward a Safer, Better and Smarter Monumental Core: A Proposed Framework

Join the George Washington Chapter of Lambda Alpha International (LAIGW) for an engaging discussion on shaping the next century of Washington’s Monumental Core, led by James Snyder, Former Director of Planning and Economic Development, City of Falls Church, Lu Hou, Principal in Urban Design, Cityscapes Associates International, and John Dugan, FAICP, Former Director of Long-Range Planning, NCPC.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a once-in-a-generation opportunity is emerging in the heart of Washington, D.C., one that could redefine the future of the Monumental Core for decades to come. This timely and thought-provoking presentation explores the transformative potential of underutilized federal properties south of the National Mall.

Rather than viewing these sites as surplus assets, the discussion reframes them as powerful catalysts for innovation, civic identity, and national legacy. Attendees will gain valuable insight into the planning, design, financing, and policy considerations shaping large-scale federal redevelopment, including public-private partnerships, adaptive reuse strategies, and forward-thinking infrastructure solutions.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of an important conversation about the future of the nation’s capital.

Agenda Update and Networking Focus

We adjusted our LAIGW luncheon format in response to member feedback that emphasized the importance of meaningful connection and more time for informal networking. By beginning the program earlier, we are creating dedicated time after the presentation for lunch and informal networking, allowing conversations to continue and relationships to develop in a more relaxed setting. Please stay after the main program to discuss with the speaker, other members and guests with this change in agenda line-up.

  • 11:00 am – Check in begins with the registration desk for name badges
  • 11:30 am – Program Welcome and Introductions, followed by formal presentation and Q&A
  • 12:30 pm –Program concludes with lunch and networking

Please enjoy a variety of sandwiches, salad, water/soda, and cookies while informally networking after the main presentation.
