About this Event

We are opening the doors of Unity Church for a talk on the history of Torquay Harbourside by Kevin Dixon and a talk on the heritage of Unity church and Unitarianism in Torquay.

This is also an opportunity for you to share your thoughts on the new conservation area management plan...

The Conservation Area Appraisal for Torquay Harbour has recently been updated by Torbay Council. This appraisal outlines what makes Torquay Harbour Area distinctive and why it’s character merits protection, helping to guide future decisions. The next step is to develop a Conservation Area Management Plan. We invite input from those who live, work, or care deeply about these places to help shape it.

What is a Conservation Area Management Plan?

A Conservation Area Management Plan is a practical guide to protecting the places we value. It sets out what makes an area special: historic buildings, beautiful streets, landscapes and character, and how it can be preserved and enhanced.

It’s a roadmap for safeguarding historic places, helping communities and decision-makers keep them at their best for the future.

  • What is the objective of this project?

To identify “What’s Special”. Using the new Conservation Area Appraisal for Torquay Harbour, we will ask questions like:

  • What’s beautiful or historic here?
  • What qualities or details must be protected?
  • What is vulnerable or under threat?

We will then look at what’s working well and what isn’t. This could include:

  • Buildings in poor repair / Unsympathetic alterations
  • Traffic or infrastructure problems
  • Opportunities for enhancement
  • The goal is to understand what needs attention.

Using all this knowledge, we will create practical, realistic actions to help preserve and improve the area. For example:

  • Design guidance for new buildings / Advice on materials
  • Public realm improvements
  • Heritage-led regeneration opportunities
  • Policies to manage change positively

We are developing a practical toolkit to preserve and maintain our local assets for the enjoyment of future generations.
